/ SIAL The Italian School / London

As part of the expansion of the Italian School of London, a new glazed link was developed to connect two adjacent Victorian buildings and allow them to operate as a single educational environment.

Located within a narrow internal lightwell and surrounded by listed structures, the intervention required a solution that would provide a direct connection between the two buildings while minimising its visual impact on the existing architecture.

Several configurations were studied before selecting a diagonal bridge arrangement, allowing the connection to make use of existing window openings, maximise natural daylight and minimise interference with the surrounding teaching spaces.

The proposal consisted of a fully enclosed glazed footbridge, designed as a lightweight and transparent element positioned within the courtyard void. The structure combined a stainless-steel support system with laminated glass walls and roof panels, creating the perception of a minimal intervention suspended between the historic façades.
